TCMFF Picks & Plans with Kim

Everyone here at Classic Couple Academy is looking forward to the TCM Classic Film Festival 2021. We’ve reviewed the scheduled programming on TCM and HBO Max and have made our selections of must-see content. Here Classic Couple Academy lead instructional designer Kim Andrews shares her TCMFF picks and plans.

Unfortunately, my schedule doesn’t allow for a hard stop to do the TCM festival this year. So, I will be intermittently joining in. My short list of must do’s includes:

Meet TCM Zoom – As a TCM Backlot member, I want to know more about the people behind the movie magic and what is in store for the future. With so much change this year, I want to know what to look forward to doing when the pandemic no longer controls our movements. Club TCM Zoom Event: Registration required.

Plan 9 from Outer Space – Both the table read and the 1959 movie. I do love the science fiction movies from just after the Roswell incident. I love to look at the societal impact and zeitgeist of the period. Plus, this one includes a table read. As a comedian, I am so looking forward to the fun and funny of this. Where else can you see Bob Odenkirk, Bobcat Goldthwait and Laraine Newman almost live? Table Read airing on TM Friday, May 7 at 8:00 pm ET; film to follow at 9:30 pm ET.

Nichols and May: Take Two – I plan to DVR it. Mike Nichols and Elaine May are improvisational comedy royalty! Hearing their radio sketches will be like taking a PhD class in funny. I plan to watch and re-watch this again and again. I have high hopes that their intelligence and wit will rub off on me through television screen osmoses. Airing on TCM Saturday, May 8 at 11:45 am ET.

American Masters (PBS) TV Series Season 10 Episode 5: Nichols and May: Take Two May 22, 1996 Directed by Phillip Schopper Shown from left: Elaine May, Mike Nichols

She May Be a Movie Star, But She’s Just Mom to Me – I love to learn about the real people behind the movie talent. In today’s celebrity conscious world, I find it comforting to learn that often celebrities are just real people in enhanced situations. It’s so reaffirming to know that they eat pancakes, take the dog for a walk, and have trouble sleeping too. To me, the personality quirks of a celebrity helps me appreciate the brilliance of the work. Club TCM Zoom Event: Registration required.
